KINsmoke lighting up Healdsburg this week

First, there was KIN in Windsor. Now, there’s KINsmoke, with a planned opening this Friday in downtown Healdsburg in the former Center Street Deli space next to the Plaza.

And both restaurants focus on flame-fired food, so it’s especially appropriate the KINsmoke’s preview party this Sunday included two public seatings with 100 percent of the proceeds going to the Valley Fire Victims, yes?

Actually, money also went to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Sonoma County, and Light the Night – Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, for even more of what owners (and both formerly managers with Guy Fieri restaurants) JC Adams and Brad Barmore call “community giveback.”

While KIN is a full service restaurant, KINsmoke is the more humble little sister, focusing on barbecue, a bar, a wood-burning stove inside, and a barbecue pit behind the joint on Center Street. There’s counter service, food sold by-the-pound, and beer and wine to-go.

Still, given its high-end address amid the Wine Country tasting rooms and clothing boutiques, this isn’t necessarily down-and-dirty ‘cue. Think a la carte entrées like coffee-rubbed Porterhouse ($30), jerk seared ahi ($16), bourbon glazed pork chop ($18), Cajun dusted blackened scallops ($22) and citrus marinated, shell-on U-12 shrimp atop dressed mixed greens ($19).

For sides, there are sautéed Brussels sprouts tossed with bacon, black pepper, cayenne pepper and mustard BBQ sauce ($3-$10), sweet potato tater tots with maple dip ($3-$9) and sautéed kale (kale!) for $2-$5 depending on portion size.

True ‘cue lovers can be happy knowing, however, that more traditional meats will come from the outdoor pit, too. That means beef short ribs ($16-$29), brisket ($23), St. Louis style pork ribs ($11-$20), pork shoulder ($18), homemade sausage ($18) and chicken ($13-$15).

As for the inevitable smoke, Healdsburg-ites shouldn’t have to worry. Adams and Barmore installed a multi-filter “smog hog” air cleaning system for both the wood stove and the wood pit.
